Emerson’s Bourbon Porter
This porter (a style of dark beer, usually slightly lighter than a stout) is matured in real bourbon casks and boy, you can tell. It is rich, dark and silky. The nose is quintessentially bourbon with a hint of espresso and the palate follows suit: bourbon, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and dark caramelized molasses all feature and it has a long, beautiful, sensual finish. It’s not cheap (NZ$11 for 500ml - over twice as much as anything comparable) but its well worth it for warming your soul on a chilly Sunday evening and at 9.2% alcohol by volume two would be most peoples limit. There was only an extremely limited production run so if you want some you better pick some up soon.

$11, they saw you comming, $8.95 at Regional Wines - and why shop anywhere else anyway?
It is a great beer for winter. When I tried it, straight from the barrel and newly blended back in late May, it had potential written all over it. This will definitely set up in the bottle, becoming smoother and develop more of everything with age.
Tried their Taieri George yet?? Not the alcohol bomb of the Bourbon Porter (but up there) and very nice.
Ah, its a pity but my supply of Bourbon Porter has run out, great while is lasted. However, Richard is already working on ideas for his next batch of Whisky/Bourbon Porter, top stuff. Rumour also has it that they are working on a Tripel, watch this space.

Probably the best beer ever produced in New Zealand (that I have tasted). I dragged out my supply for a few years... wish I'd brough a pallet load though as I ran out late last winter.
